Thank you to  Jeff Brune, Business Development Specialist for First State Community Bank for hosting Notre Dame Business Law's "Dog Fight" (Our version of Shark Tank).  Also thank you to our other participants, Gunnar Knudtson, Business Development at  First Missouri State Bank, Kim Likens, media sales consultant at KFVS 12, and Dan Ryan owner of Lawless Harley Davidson. All student participants received valuable insights toward the business plans and presentations they developed. We appreciate them taking time out of their busy work day!

Class of 2018 Valedictorian, Samantha Sabapathypillai, is the daughter of Mercy and Noel Sabapathypillai of Cape Girardeau.  Samantha attended St. Vincent de PaulSamantha Sabapathypillai Grade School and is a member of LaCroix Methodist Church.  While at ND, Samantha was active in National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Women in God’s Service (WINGS), Pro-Life Club, Big Brother Big Sister, and Franciscan Leadership Club.  She was a part of the JV Softball Team.  Samantha received the JV and V letters for Community Service and has been recognized as Student of the Year in Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra, Interpersonal Communications, and Health.  In addition, she has received Student of the Month for Math, Foreign Language, and Science.  On the National Spanish Exam, Samantha earned a Silver and Bronze medal.  She has been named a Bright Flight Scholar, Presidential Finalist at St. Louis University, and received the Mizzou Chancellor’s Award.

Samantha plans to attend the University of Missouri at Kansas City where she has been accepted to the six-year B.A./M.D. program.  She hopes to become a physician.  

From Samantha: “I would like to thank my family for always pushing me to work hard, my teachers for continuously answering my questions and always helping me, and my friends for always supporting me.”



Class of 2018 Salutatorian, Blake Sparkman, is the daughter of Randy and Laura Sparkman of Cape Girardeau. Blake attended St. Vincent de Paul Grade School andBlake Sparkman is a member of LaCroix Methodist Church.  While at ND, Blake was active in Franciscan Leadership Club, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Friends of the Library, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Athletes Give Back, Women in God’s Service (WINGS), Peer Helpers, Pro-Life Club, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society.  As a member of the Soccer Team, she has earned a Varsity letter.  She received two bars for Christian Service to add to her Varsity letter.  She was recognized as the Spanish III and Civics Student of the Year.  Blake was awarded the Bob and Bernice Christian Service Scholarship.  

Blake plans to attend St. Louis University and study Chemistry on a pre-med track.  She hopes to become a surgeon and travel as a medical missionary.

From Blake: “I want to thank my parents for loving and supporting me, Brother David for being the best principal a school can ask for, and God for His blessings.”

Congratulations to Senior Grace Powderly! Grace will join the Lady Redhawks next year.  Grace has played tennis all four years at ND, winning three individual District championships and qualifying for State three times.

ND Senior Drew Beussink has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

Congratulations to the 2018 Performing and Visual Arts Hall of Fame Members! These talented alumni were honored at a luncheon on April 7 and before the Saturday performance of Meet Me in St. Louis. Thank you for your contribution to the Arts.  


Claire Bira (Class of 2007) is a self-employed professional photographer. While at ND, Claire was a member of the National Art Honor Society.  She earned her BS in Fine Arts and English from St. Louis University.  Over the past seven years she has built her business, Imageclarity Photo and Cinema, photographing weddings, commercial shoots, family photographs, and the beauty of everyday life.  She has been recognized by The Knot, Missouri Wedding Belles, The Westchester Wedding Planner, and Magnolia Rouge Curated Collection. In addition to running her business, Claire is guest lecturer on photography at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Claire gives of time and talent through photo shoots in support of charitable causes. Congratulations, Claire Bira!



Greg Worley (Class of 1991) was active in the Arts while a student at ND even helping with scenery for the musicals. He received a Bachelor of Architecture and Design from Kansas State University. Greg is the owner of  ARCH –WORX  in St. Louis, Missouri and has been recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects (team member in the design of City Garden, St. Louis);  St. Louis At Home Magazine Architect and Designer Awards; American Institute of Architects (AIA) St. Louis Design Honor Award; and Central States AIA Design (Merit Award in Residential Architecture). Greg shares his talents by creating mobile libraries for disadvantaged neighborhoods. Congratulations Greg Worley!



Carly Schneider (Class of 2008) participated in the fall plays and spring musicals while a student at ND, culminating in the role of Babe in Pajama Game. She was a member of the International Thespian Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society.  She graduated with a BA in Musical Theatre from Missouri State University and toured with Missoula Children’s Theatre and Nebraska Caravan in The Christmas Carol. Carly has performed in various regional theatre venues and has held notable roles including Beth in Little Women, Sister James in Doubt, and Penny Pingleton in Hairspray. She gives back to the community through “Arts for All” in lower-income schools across the five boroughs of New York and performs in “Broadway Unlocked” raising funds for the Crime Victim Treatment Center. Congratulations Carly!


Ann Welker (Class of 1976 and current faculty member) earned a BS in Secondary Education, major in English, minor in Music from Southeast Missouri State University and a MA in English from Southeast Missouri State University.  She is a former member of Southeast's Marching Eagles. Ann was recognized as the Southeast Missouri English Teacher of the Year in 2015. Ann has been a member of the Notre Dame Musical Orchestra for over 20 years and performed with the  Cape Girardeau Municipal Band for 15 years. Ann shares her talents with the students at ND playing for school liturgies and she is active in the St. Vincent's parish music ministry. Congratulations Ann!

Congratulations District Champions!

Scholar Bowl team won the district contest on April 14.  Notre Dame hosted districts.  Players were captain Drew Beussink, Cody Bunger, Anna Dittmer, Mason Galemore, Linda Hu, Sean Murphy, Elizabeth Raines, Aarti Sahai, and Claire Southard.  Drew Beussink (2nd place individual medal) and Cody Bunger (tying for the 5th place medal) were named to the all-district team.  Sectionals will be Tuesday, April 24 at Ste. Genevieve.

Rep. Jason Smith has appointed ND senior J.P. Schuchardt to the U.S. Naval Academy.  According to, appointments are invitations to attend the Naval Academy. In a typical year, approximately 5,000 candidates receive nominations. However, only 1,400 appointments will be given out.

Notre Dame students participated in the Bishop's Walk on Friday during PE classes.  Donations were made for a dress down day.  Proceeds go to Catholic Charities of  Southern Missouri.  

All are invited to attend the Bishop's Walk at ND this weekend on Sunday at 1pm.
